Our citizen science activities let community members contribute to real conservation work right here on the Coffs Coast.
Citizen Science Activities with NPA
At NPA Coffs Coast branch, our Citizen Science activities provide a hands-on way for community members to contribute to the conservation of our local environment. These activities allow participants to actively help monitor, protect, and restore our unique ecosystems from the escarpment to the coast.
What Happens During Our Citizen Science Activities?
Field Monitoring and Data Collection
We focus mainly on protecting local public native forests and at risk ecosystems. Participants head out with a skilled leader into various environments to collect valuable data on local fauna and flora and habitat elements using various equipment. Diurnal and nocturnal survey work is undertaken. Activities can include:
Map reading & bush safety
Recording sightings of birds, mammals, reptiles
Monitoring the health of native plant species
Recording feral plants and animals
Tracking environmental changes such as water quality or erosion
Using Bionet
Species Identification and Education
Learn how to identify local flora and fauna with the guidance of experienced volunteers and scientists. You will be introduced to:
Field survey techniques
Species identification skills
Ecological concepts and conservation challenges
Contributing to Real Scientific Research
The data collected by Citizen Scientists helps inform conservation strategies, management plans, and policy decisions. Your contributions directly support the protection of local ecosystems and endangered species.
Community Engagement and Skill-Building
Citizen Science activities are also a fantastic way to connect with like-minded individuals and develop practical skills in environmental conservation. You’ll gain hands-on experience while making a real difference.
